This post will walk through how to do that correctly.

Background

I wanted to cover a topic that came up in support recently. The issue revolves around how third-party updates are downloaded to devices and how specific settings affect where that content comes from.

That article primarily focused on first-party updates. This one digs into some ConfigMgr settings that cause a lot of confusion around where update content actually comes from. ConfigMgr does a good job of masking the real problem here, with the wrong settings, things technically work… until you scale.

The Cloud file provider exited unexpectedly

404 Error – .cab File Missing

Occasionally this error appears when attempting to deploy updates: 0x80070194

This is usually the result of a missing .cab file. If the CAB file doesn’t exist, you will be unable to download and deploy that specific update(s) where the CAB file is deleted.

When working with WSUS—especially in large ConfigMgr/SCCM environments—database bloat and superseded updates can cause synchronization failures, ADR issues, and overall sluggish console performance. Administrators often need deeper visibility into the WSUS database to understand:

How many updates are currently stored
Which updates are superseded
Whether superseded updates have been properly declined
Whether WSUS has accumulated a backlog of obsolete updates that require cleanup
Whether a specific update is declined in WSUS (useful for ConfigMgr troubleshooting)

I struggled with this one while setting up Co-management testing in Microsoft Configuration Manager.
Cloud Attach completed successfully — everything looked good. I entered my Entra ID Global Admin credentials and all indicators turned green.

But nothing would sync.

Fix SCCM Feature Update Loop: Troubleshooting Guide

To understand this problem, remember that SCCM is only attempting to launch the setup file for the feature update. The feature update is failing, and SCCM continues to try to run the setup. As part of the setup process the PC must reboot—hence the loop after the setup failure.
